Job Title: Design Engineer
Type: Contract
Location: Southampton, Hampshire
Salary: £30.00 to £40.00 per annum
Job Reference: LA123

Job Description

Our client require an experienced contract Electronics Design Engineer for a 4 month project.

They are now in advanced prototype stage and they need to re-visit the electronics PCB which controls power, sensors, drive motor, actuators, data logging and telemetry (Wi-Fi- Iridium Satellite) as well as GPS positioning.  The system incorporates an IMU inertial navigation module (MEMS) and depth (pressure) sensor as well as onboard MEMS temperature, pressure and humidity sensor. The current system is based around an INTEL Edison module which is now obsolete.

The project is to revisit a current design and replace the Edison with an alternative.  In addition, there are a number of improvements to the design slated which will require incorporating along with a number of new, additional features.  The System architecture and firmware remains essentially the same and so this is not a design from scratch exercise, rather an upgrade.  They believe the circuit, in its new form could be smaller, and lower power with additional capabilities.

The system uses low power components and techniques where possible as this is a power conscious project.

The engineer will have access to all of the existing design documentation, as well as example hardware.

The work package would include:

  • A review of the current design, and in discussion with their engineers, define the new design specification.
  • Design the complete circuit and in conjunction with their engineers test and prove each element.
  • Produce Circuit BOM (in conjunction with their engineers)
  • Produce a CAD design for the PCB layout Currently produced in Eagle and is 4 layer. DFM (Design for manufacture)
  • Define test procedures, production procedures etc.
  • Test and fault find first generation PCB’s for compliance against specification
  • Undertake modifications and corrections following above if required.
  • Produce technical documentation for the design.

Attributes:

  • Able to undertake DFM CAD PCB Layout
  • Working knowledge of Python and C++ would be an advantage
  • Knowledge of Software Test methods would be an advantage
  • Knowledge and experience of headless (embedded) systems would be an advantage
  • Experience of product development and Commercialisation. would be an advantage
  • Knowledge or experience of general technologies (e.g. telemetry, navigation (GPS, INS), control systems, sensor interfacing) would be an advantage
